Blaire & Kayla’s Long Distance Love Story

Blaire & Kayla’s Long Distance Love Story

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been in a long distance relationship. Every sappy song makes you want to cry. A certain smell takes you back to a memory you had with her. The time difference and falling asleep on the phone together. You go to sleep with her on your mind and wake up excited about the possibilities of doing life with her by your side. That ache you get knowing you can’t be with her on bad days when you just need a kiss on the forehead. Simple things that couples take for granted. The thrill of seeing her come down the escalator at the airport. The familiar touch. That smirk. You feel like you’re in a movie waiting for the fairytale ending. Blaire and Kayla have that magic (and a side of hilarity to go along with it.) I’ll let their love story speak for itself:

1. Where do you live? Tell us a little bit about what you both spend a majority of your time doing.

K: We live in The Woodlands, TX. I am currently in the process of adjusting from my fiancee visa to a greencard so that’s taken up a lot of my time since I got here. Now that that’s done I’ve moved on to more important things like drinking margaritas, wood burning, nursing school prerequisites, and trying to learn how to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius.

B: I spend the majority of my time at the sports complex where I work, and getting ready to start nursing school in the fall. Aside from that, I like to plan detailed brunches, take pictures of my cat Rosie, and spend time with my gorgeous wife (maybe binge watching some Netflix) and our 5 year old daughter Ella. She keeps us on our toes for sure.

2. How long have you been together?

K: Two years. B: What she said.

3. What is the first thing you remember about the other when you first met?

K: Well, funny story. I actually asked Blaire to be my girlfriend before I “met” her. So the first time I met her in person was 3 months later when I got off a plane in Houston. The first thing I remember about her is how tiny she was, like she’s the nugget to my chicken strip.

B: This is a hard question to answer because I started dating her exclusively a few months before we had physically met in person. But, if we are talking about what it was like to actually see and touch her? I was a sweaty mess. August in Texas mixed with nerves and a hyper three year old in a busy airport was not a great combo for me wearing a heather gray shirt. She stuck around and even kissed me that night, though. So I guess it wasn’t a complete disaster. I just remember how perfect her smile and her dimples were when they were actually right in front of me. It’s still one of my favorite things.

4. How did the proposal go down?

K: I was told there would be tacos. I got a fiancee instead, way better.

B: Hahaha! Tacos. I forgot that is how I tricked her. Kayla and I just decided that we wanted to get married. (Who said romance is dead?) But one thing I was serious about was getting to ask her to marry me. She didn’t know how or when, but she knew I was going to. Like, we already had Steph booked for our engagement shoot (lolol complete with the world’s most awkward voicemail on Steph’s phone. “Um, hi. This is Blaire Lormand. I found you on Pinterest… but I live in Houston! My girlfriend and I want to book you to do our engagement pictures. We aren’t engaged YET, but we need to do pictures before she flies back to Canada at the end of January” HAHAH! I cannot believe she even called us back!) Ok… The proposal, minus tacos. Kayla and I were flying back to Houston from a friend’s wedding in Baltimore on New Years Day (where I randomly ran into Steph in the Denver airport! We almost missed our flights because we immediately found each other so we could embrace & take a photo.) I had my mom and Nana text Kayla and try to plan dinner for that night. They said “Let’s go to Rico’s for margs.” Kayla’s favorite! So, when we landed in Houston (We were on separate flights back, so I had all of 15 minutes to get into position) Kayla headed down to baggage claim to meet me and have my mom pick us up to head out for Rico’s… but she turned around to a group of our friends, me holding an engagement ring, and Ella with a sign that said “Will You Marry Us?”. “She said YES, Mom! She said YESSS!”- Ella. The rest was history.

5. Was there one memory from your relationship that sticks out more than others?

K: One thing I’m happy is a memory now, but resulted countless memories I’ll always cherish is how long we spent long distance. Taking Blaire everywhere with me on FaceTime. We literally fell asleep and woke up on FaceTime on our laptops every night for a year and a half, but I took her everywhere. We went to the beach, she came to parties, I mean she even came to Walmart. My other huge memory is the day we had my K1 visa interview in Montreal, so much of the past year was stress, anxiety, and mountains of paperwork leading up to that event. It was a hectic morning, we hadn’t slept and we got to the consulate waited in line and realized Blaire forgot her passport at the hotel. So they wouldn’t let her in the building so I had to go it alone. The interview lasted all of 10 minutes and by the time I was done she had gotten back and they handed me a piece of paper that said welcome to America and for the first time it was like we were allowed to breathe. We could plan our wedding and our future and just have a normal everyday. That was the fourth best day ever.

B: A memory that stands out to me is the one time I decided at 2:45am on a Friday that I was going to fly to Vancouver to spend the weekend with Kayla, because she said she really missed me. I jumped on a plane at 6:15am. That was honestly the most spontaneous thing I had ever done, and I’m so glad that I did. Getting to see where she called home at the time, and seeing all of the places she had shown me over FaceTime in person was amazing. She took me out dancing, and to a waterfall, and to a beach, and to Tim Horton’s. It was my first time in Canada and it was so perfect.

6. Top 3 things that make a marriage last?

K: 1. Being adaptable to the fact that people, circumstances, and life is always changing. The person you marry isn’t going to be exactly the same person 3 years or 6 months from now and I think that’s actually an awesome thing. 2. Making the decision to choose them daily. 3. A sense of humor and laughter. I want to laugh for literally ever.

B: 1. There are two important things you need to make time for in a marriage. Quality time with your spouse for date nights and special memories, and time for yourself to recharge and focus on you. 2. Encourage them in everything they do. Be a voice of positivity and love. Support their dreams. 3. DO not keep track of all the “sacrifices” you make for them, change that word to “investments” and invest in your marriage.

7. What is one piece of advice that you would give to other couples planning their wedding?

K: Blaire and I plan things so differently in the sense that I don’t, and she had like 16 pinterest boards dedicated to individual wedding details. So we both had to be flexible with each other. We had the fun challenge of planning a wedding in 3 months so beyond having Steph taking our pictures we really didn’t have a huge plan in place. It all had to come together really fast so there were some stressful days and when that happened we just had to take a day off. Completely ban planning for a day, which was exactly what we needed.

B: The actual day goes by SO fast. Like so so SO fast. Don’t let yourself stress out about what cake stand you’re going to use or plates or even the food too much. None of it matters. What matters is that it’s the day you get to marry your person. Focus on that. Make sure you’re relaxed and stress free that day, because what you’re going to want to remember isn’t the signature cocktails, it’s going to be the look in her eyes as she’s saying her vows to you. That’s magic.
