“Lesbian Wedding” vs. just “Wedding”

“Lesbian Wedding” vs. just “Wedding”

Good morning friends and complete strangers!

Typically, I don’t write blog posts on my business site to get a specific point across…mostly it’s to share love stories and sweet, mushy love photos. Today I feel like something needs to be explained to the masses. Over the last 3 years I’ve been asked why I clarify that it’s a “Lesbian Wedding or Engagement” vs. just a “Wedding”. After all, it IS 2016 and we have come a long way since marriage equality in 2015. The comment I received this week said,

“WHY IS THIS A “LESBIAN ENGAGEMENT”?  IT’S 2017…IT’S JUST CALLED AN ENGAGEMENT”.

To that I say…GREAT QUESTION, person I don’t know. At last, the mystery is revealed.

You’ll be happy to know that my answer is short, sweet and to the point.

Just a shot in the dark but I think it’s safe to say that the people asking these valid questions probably have never planned a wedding for two brides or two grooms. Let’s say I am gay [I am. The gayest.] and I want to plan my wedding. I start by searching for engagement photo ideas and wedding photo ideas. I go to Google and I type in “engagement photo ideas” then click on images, right?

[Side note: Seriously go do it. I just did. Scroll through the entire first page…all you see are straight couples. Oh wow except ONE of my photos of two girls. That’s kinda cool! But I digress.] Now do the same for “wedding photo ideas”. Same thing. All the straight couples in love because that’s all that was on the internet for so long. When the lesbian Indian wedding I shot in LA went viral in 2013 it was hard to find photography of gay and lesbian weddings. Vendors struggled with putting up same sex photography or verbiage on their website saying they were in support of same sex weddings because they were afraid of losing clients. Right in the middle of this happening…when gay couples were being denied wedding cakes from bakeries and having no luck with venues I started marketing myself as an LGBT Wedding Photographer. I wanted same sex couples to be able to find what they were looking for when they searched for it.

Now go to Google and type in “Lesbian Wedding Photography” or “Lesbian Engagement Photos”…BOOM there they are! My clients love stories and photos. Right where they need to be.

The end.

Love, Steph
